Carrera eyewear is comprised of sunglasses for both men and women and also features unisex models. Aviator sunglasses are a prominent style. Frame shapes include pilot, square, round, and mask. The frames are made of plastic, metal, or optyl material. There are many different types of lenses including, but not limited to, polar, multilayer, shaded, mirror, anti-glare, and many others. Both frames and lenses come in a multitude of colors. Prescription lenses are available.

Wilhelm Anger founded Carrera in Austria in 1956. Inspired by the Carrera Panamericana auto race, Anger decided to produce and distribute sports eyewear. In 1964, he patented an innovative plastic called Optyl. This new material weighs 20% less than acetate and other thermoplastic materials. It is harder wearing and adapts to the user’s face. Carrera soon expanded its product line to include the distribution of ski helmets and goggles. This resulted in the first ever pair of ski goggles with interchangeable lenses in 1974. More sports glasses came in 1977 before a revolutionary line of sunglasses called the Carrera Porsche Design Collection launched in 1979. This collection came about as a result of collaboration with motorcar designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Consequently, folding glasses and interchangeable lenses first came about at this time. 2 years later, Carrera launched prescription frames. The company continued to expand its line of sunglasses with the Boeing and Sunjet Collections. Throughout the 1980s, Carrera sponsored a plethora of sporting events, such as the America’s Cup (yacht race), the 1988 Winter Olympics, and Formula 1 racing. Carrera further expands its product line in 1990 with the introduction of cycling goggles and helmets. Safilo Group, an Italian eyewear company, bought Carrera in 1996 and moved the company’s headquarters to Padova, Italy. Since then, Carrera has produced bestselling sunglasses models Carrera Champion and Carrera Safari in 2008. Today, Safilo Group is the second largest eyewear company, behind Luxottica.
