Mario and Martino Prada created the Prada brand in 1913 as a leather goods shop in Milan, Italy. These goods were well known for their exotic materials, with some goods being made of alligator and walrus. This fine quality attracted the attention of the Italian royal household and gained fame among Europe’s elite class. Mario’s granddaughter Miuccia took over the family business in 1977 after her mother. She met Patrizio Bertelli in 1978, who advised her to rework Mario’s original designs and concentrate the production of Prada goods Italy, advice that she wisely decided to take. She started by introducing a new luggage line made of a lightweight synthetic fabric called Pocone that was trimmed in Saffiano leather, the same leather that comprised the luggage of the Italian royal family. In 1984, she introduced a backpack made of simple black nylon. Initial success came slowly, but would soon become a commercial hit and catch on like wildfire, becoming the ultimate status symbol in fashion. With this success, Prada soon expanded outside of Milan, with stores opening in Florence, Paris, Madrid, and New York City. Soon, the company launched ready-to-wear collections for women and men, as well as footwear and accessories. A secondary line called Miu Miu, which caters to women’s clothing and accessories, is also introduced. Prada soon formed a joint venture known as EID with De Rigo Group to produce eyewear in 1999. That venture ends a few years later, as Prada gets a 10-year licensing agreement with Luxottica, the world’s largest eyewear company, with the well-known brands Ray-Ban, Persol, and Oakley, to produce eyewear for both its primary and secondary lines (Prada and Miu Miu, respectively). Miuccia continues to be the head designer of Prada, bringing her creative foresight to the table to make Prada one of the most successful and recognized brands in the world.
